Thompson: No Ban on Abortion

GOP candidate Fred Thompson said yesterday on Meet the Press that: "I think people ought to be free at state and local levels to make decisions that even Fred Thompson disagrees with," referring to the issue of abortion.

Romney, Huckabee Neck and Neck in Values Voter Straw Poll, McCain Comes in Last

Mitt Romney won today's straw poll at the Values Voters' Summit with 1,595 votes, just 30 votes more than Mike Huckabee's 1,565.

Ron Paul came in third with 865 votes followed by Fred Thompson who recieved 564 votes. Sam Brownback, who ended his campaign yesterday, had 297 votes bringing him ahead of Duncan Hunter at 140 and Tom Tancredo at 133.

However, Rudy Giuliani did not finish last. The former New York City mayor came ahead of John McCain with 107 votes compared to McCain's 81.

Thompson: We Can't Win by Becoming More Like Democrats

"Some people think, seemingly, that we need to defeat the Democrats next year by becoming more like them," former Tennessee Senator and 2008 Republican presidential candidate said at a meeting of the New York Conservative Party. He went onto say: "It's not time for philosophical flexibility in terms of our principles. That is a sure-fire way of making sure we won't win."

Although I do not agree with Thompson on every issue he is right here. The Republicans will have a hard time winning with a candidate like Rudy Giulaini. The Republicans have a better shot at winning with a social conservative than winning with a candidate that has been backed by the Liberal Party of New York.

Coulter Goes After Huckabee and Thompson

Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee are the targets of conservative columnest and author Ann Coulter's most recent editoral.

Coulter says that: "Conservatives unhappy with our Republican presidential candidates seem to be drifting aimlessly toward Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee in the misguided belief that these candidates are more conservative than Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney. This is like breaking up with Bobby Brown so you can date Phil Spector."

She goes onto attack Huckabee's position on illegal immigration, among other things, saying that: "Huckabee makes George Bush sound like Tom Tancredo."

Coulter is also critical of Thompson voting against impeaching Presidential Bill Clinton.

Thompson: Leave Gay Marriage to the States

The Associated Press Reports:

Thompson favors a constitutional amendment that bars judges from legalizing gay marriage, but also leaves open the door for state legislatures to approve the practice. He said social and religious conservatives who would prefer an amendment that also bars legislatures from legalizing gay marriage can live with his view.

Dobson Opposes Thompson

Fred Thompson has been added to James Dobson's list of Republicans that he doesn't support. In an email to friends that the Associated Press obtained Dobson says: "Not for me, my brothers. Not for me!" referring to the former Tennessee Senator.

Dobson, who is the founder of Focus on the Family, went on to say: "Isn't Thompson the candidate who is opposed to a Constitutional amendment to protect marriage, believes there should be 50 different definitions of marriage in the U.S., favors McCain-Feingold, won't talk at all about what he believes, and can't speak his way out of a paper bag on the campaign trail?"

In responding to the email Sen. Thompson said: "If in fact this e-mail ... reflects his views, so be it. I have a lot of friends who I think are friends of his who have a high regard for me, and I'm very proud of that."

Huckabee Wins Value Voter Debate Straw Poll

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee won the Values Voter Debate held last night after the first Values Voter Debate.

Huckabee won with 219 of the 400 ballots cast, Ron Paul trailed far behind with just 44 votes, Brownback had 18 with Fred Thompson, who did not attend the debate, coming in fourth with 15 votes.

Even though the four front-runners were not present, this was the first major debate that Chicago businessman John Cox was invited to and was also Alan Keyes' first debate since announcing his third candidacy for the Republican nomination last week.

Sen. Thompson To Join Race

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is set to file the paper work for a "testing the waters" committee this coming Monday, the day before the CNN Republican debate.

"Thompson, as of now, is seen by some as best positioned to be the guy who can keep this conservative coalition together," says Chuck Todd of NBC.

Todd goes onto say: "Like the rest of the three frontrunners, though, there are some positions Thompson has taken in the past (including supporting McCain-Feingold campaign finance regulation and abortion) that indicate Thompson may be just as muddy on some key conservative positions as Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain."

Poll: McCain Takes Lead, Thompson Takes On Romney

After coming in second place in recent Republican polls, Sen. John McCain came in first place with 22% in a poll held in South Carolina.

Rudy Giuliani came in second with 19% but, Mitt Romney lost his third place position to Fred Thompson who scored 11% with Romney close behind with 10%. South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, who has said he will not run, finished fourth with 8%.

F. Thompson Faces Problems With RNC Leadership

Former Senator Fred Thompson, who is considering a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, is the candidate that some conservatives are wanting, but he will face some difficulty with the RNC leadership.

But to run successfully, the people’s candidate must now find a way to work with dejected party powers. It will be tricky…

The people want Thompson to clean up the liberal cesspool camped out at RNC headquarters, and then their country. They like Thompson because he seems aware of the fact that compromise is greatly over-rated. He understands that real truth is always true and that anything half right is also half wrong. They expect him to not compromise…

Meanwhile, pressure for Thompson to bargain for needed RNC support will be enormous. If he succumbs to that pressure, even a little bit, the conservatives who drafted him will discard him in disgust, just like any other useless RINO. If he doesn’t capitulate to RNC pressure, those in power might make it tough for him to win the RNC nomination.

Fred the Thompson of Choice

Last week's poll question was "Which Thompson Would You Be More Likely To Support?"

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson (R) came out on top with 46.43% of the 28 votes cast. Former Tomah, Wisconsin, Mayor Ed Thompson (L) came in second with 29.29% followed by his older brother and former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson (R) with 14.29%.

Another Thompson Candidacy?

There may another Thompson joining the GOP field. Former Tennessee Senator turned Law and Order star Fred Thompson is considering a run for the White House.

Thompson appeared on Fox News Sunday this week and said "I'm giving some thought to it," and that he is "concerned about what's going on in this country, in the world."

There is already a web site urging Thompson to run, www.fred08.com. The site says "From tax cuts, to cleaning up government, to his vital role in the confirmation of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Fred Thompson has a record of fighting for conservative values."

Thompson voted against same-sex marriage and against partial birth abortions.
