Tancredo Quits Race, Endorses Romney

Tom Tancredo ended his campaign for the Republican nomination today and endorsed Mitt Romney.

The Colorado congressman ended his campaign because he did not want to be a spoiler that could lead to a candidate that is weak on immigration getting the nomination. Tancredo said that Romney has a "solid record" on immigration and he could "go the distance."

Tancredo Boycotts Spanish-language Debate

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Tom Tancredo is boycotting today's debate hosted by Univison that will be presented in the Spanish language.

Tancredo said in a press release Friday that: "It is the law that to become a naturalized citizen of this country you must have knowledge and understanding of English, including a basic ability to read, write, and speak the language. So what may I ask are our presidential candidates doing participating in a Spanish speaking debate?"

Republican National Hispanic Assembly chairman Danny Vargas said that Tancredo is missing a chance to reach out to voters saying that: "You've got third generation Americans who maybe just prefer watching the programing on that particular channel. It's the fifth largest network (in terms of viewers) in the country."

Keyes/Tancredo CP Ticket?

Today Republican presidential candidate and Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo announced that he will not seek re-election to his Congressional seat.

"The issue now has a life of its own and it doesn't need one particular person to champion it," Tancredo said referring to the illegal immigration issue. He went onto say: "I feel my job, my task, has been completed. And I am very much at peace with the idea that if I'm not elected president then I won't be running."

And last Thursday Alan Keyes, another Republican candidate, met with the Constitution Party National Executive Committee.

I believe that it is very possible that these two long shot GOP candidates could become the 2008 Constitution Party presidential ticket.

Romney, Huckabee Neck and Neck in Values Voter Straw Poll, McCain Comes in Last

Mitt Romney won today's straw poll at the Values Voters' Summit with 1,595 votes, just 30 votes more than Mike Huckabee's 1,565.

Ron Paul came in third with 865 votes followed by Fred Thompson who recieved 564 votes. Sam Brownback, who ended his campaign yesterday, had 297 votes bringing him ahead of Duncan Hunter at 140 and Tom Tancredo at 133.

However, Rudy Giuliani did not finish last. The former New York City mayor came ahead of John McCain with 107 votes compared to McCain's 81.

Politics1: Tancredo, Paul Both Likely to Go Third Party

Politics1 reports today that: "The Paul and Tancredo comments -- probably intentionally -- kicked the doors wide open to Paul seeking the Libertarian nomination and Tancredo seeking the Constitution nomination for President in the general election."

I believe that if Paul were to become the Libertarian nominee that the Constitution Party leadership would push for an endorsement of him on that ticket. Earlier in the year Constitution Party chairman Jim Clymer said that if Paul some how managed to win the Republican nomination that the CP convention delegates would most likely endorse him and I would expect the same would hold true if Paul were the Libertarian candidate. However, the problem the CPers may have is if they would be willing to endorse the Libertarian vice presidential nominee.

Tancredo Wants Federal Ban of Same Sex Marriage

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Tom Tancredo announced in Iowa today that he is in favor of Federal ban on same sex marriages.

The Des Moines Register reported:

Tancredo held a press conference on the steps of the Iowa State Capitol building to denounce a decision made by Polk County District Judge Robert Hanson, who ruled in August that Iowa's gay-marriage ban is unconstitutional.

The Colorado congressman argued a federal ban is necessary to ensure "activist judges" will not make similar rulings that pave the way for legal recognition of relationships based on bigamy, polygamy and incest.

CP Goes After Hunter's Son for Military Service / Calls Keyes, Tancredo and Hunter ‘Tweedle Dee’ and ‘Tweedle Dum’ Candidates

I do not think it is right for the Constitution Party to include the fact that Hunter's son has served two tours in Iraq in their attack on Hunter's position on the war. Attacking a person for serving his country is just not acceptable.

It also doesn't make sense why the Constitution Party would include Hunter, Tancredo and Keyes in their presidential preference poll a while back when the Chair of the party says that all candidates out side of Ron Paul are "...‘Tweedle Dee’ and ‘Tweedle Dum’ candidates..."

Republican Candidates on the new immigration legislation:

Mitt Romney:
"I strongly oppose today's bill going through the Senate. It is the wrong approach. Any legislation that allows illegal immigrants to stay in the country indefinitely, as the new 'Z-Visa' does, is a form of amnesty. That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S."

Tom Tancredo:
Bill creators "seem to think that they can dupe the American public into accepting a blanket amnesty if they just call it 'comprehensive' or 'earned legalization' or 'regularization.' The president is so desperate for a legacy and a domestic-policy win that he is willing to sell out the American people and our national security."

Duncan Hunter:
"I vow to oppose this legislation supported by Senators Edward Kennedy and John McCain.It provides a vast new immigration benefit to millions of illegal aliens who have broken our laws to live in the United States.I opposed the 1986 amnesty act because of this same reason.It proved to be the draw that we predicted it would be.I am deeply disappointed to see history repeating itself."

Paul, Tancredo and Hunter Not Likely CP Candidates

Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter are all seeking the Republican nomination for the presidency. They are all also included in a presidential election poll on the Constitution Party web site, http://www.constitutionparty.com/.

Paul is currently leading with 45% in that poll as the first choice candidate for the Constitution Party nomination. Tancredo is in second 21% and just 5% are in favor of Hunter.

What is the reality that one of these men will become the next CP nominee? I believe there is none. Yesterday on my show the Louisiana CP contact Trent Hill said that not of these these men are currently interested in a Constitution Party run but, their is still a slim possibility that one of them may.

However, Hunter probably is the least likely to make a third party run since his son is planning on running as a Republican to replace his father in congress.

Tancredo Calls for Border Wall

"It's important to understand, my friends, that people coming across our country into this country, some of them are coming for the same purpose as they people who went to Beslan. It's not all people who are just looking for the job that no other American wants ... but there are other people, very dangerous people, who come across that border unimpeded, and there is absolutely nothing to say that the same thing that happened in Beslan could not happen here," said Republican presidential candidate Rep. Tom Tancredo.

Here is Tancredo's solution: "I want not only a fence, I want a wall. I want troops on the border. I want to know who is coming into this country. I want to know for what purpose and for how long, and why is that so difficult for people to understand?"

Paul Leading CP Poll

Republican Congressman and former Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul is ahead in a poll on the Constitution Party web site.

Out the 2,533 votes cast so far, Paul leads as the first choice candidate for President with 42%. Congressman Tom Tancredo is in second with 23% with Alan Keyes in third with 12%. Roy More is polling 8%, Congressman Duncan Hunter 5%, Constitution Party founder and three time presidential candidate Howard Phillips has 4%. 2004 CP Vice Presidential candidate Chuck Baldwin has 3%, Jim Gilchrist 2%, Montana State Rep. Rick Jore 1%, and Jerome Corsi, author of Unfit for Command, has 0%.

For second choice candidate Tancredo leads the field with 27% and Keyes is the top third choice candidate with 16%.

Tancredo Is In

Congressman Tom Tancredo made his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination official today.

Tancredo will be making illegal immigration the focus of his campaign. When asked why he was running, Tancredo said "You look and you see no one is going to make this [illegal imagination] the primary issue of their campaign."

Bay Buchanan Joins Tancredo Campaign

Bay Buchanan, sister of past presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, has left her job at CNN to become the Senior Adviser of Tom Tancredo's presidential campaign.

In an e-mail sent out by the Tancredo campaign Buchanan says "I want to tell you why I am endorsing Tom and why I am going to do everything in my power to see that Tom Tancredo wins this nomination. First, Tom is a man of principle and integrity; he says what he believes and believes what he says. This alone sets him apart from the crowd in Washington and certainly from among the media designated 'top-tier' in this race."

Buchanan went onto say that "The Tancredo campaign is about the kind of America we want to leave to our children. It is too important a cause for us to leave to chance. And so, I am pledging my time and effort to see that Tom Tancredo is the next President of the United States."

Tancredo a '24-Carat Conservative'

"But Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., carrying on his presidential campaign here in New Hampshire over the past few days, is the full-spectrum, 24-carat conservative on everything from entitlement spending to abortion to illegal immigrants to the threat of a rapidly arming China," says Tom Curry of MSNBC.

Curry also points out that the long shot candidate is more conservative than fellow presidential contender Congressman Duncan Hunter of California. Tancredo voted against the President's multi-hundred billion dollar Medicare prescription drug plan for the elderly while Hunter voted in favor of it.

Tancredo Joins Field

Congressman Tom Tancredo has joined the growing field of Republicans candidates by announcing that he has formed an exploratory committee.

"I am writing to you as a fellow believer in the cause of securing America's borders. My purpose is to obtain your support as I embark upon a path that may lead to the Republican nomination for the Presidency of the United States," Tancredo says in a letter to the American people, which he put on his new campaign site.

He goes onto say, "I am also considering this campaign because I believe the Republican Party and its leaders must recommit themselves to limited, smaller government; fiscal responsibility; and honesty in public office."

Tancredo has been given A ratings from conservative groups such as the National Right to Life Committee and the Family Research Council.

The Conservative Voice: Third Party 2008

The Conservative Voice columnist William Calhoun said in his November 17th article, "Election 2008: Conservative Third Party?",that conservatives will likely have to turn to a third party candidate such as Lou Dobbs, Jim Gilchrist or Congressman Tom Tancredo.

Calhoun says that the leading Republicans for the nomination are too liberal and that the Republican Party is traditionally a liberal party.

"Although Mitt Romney has tried recently to sell himself as a conservative, he has a very long track record of liberal causes. One can almost be certain that he is a liberal in disguise.

Some may say that Newt Gingrich is not a liberal per se, but he (unlike Reagan) certainly backs a neocon interventionist foreign policy, and would probably start another war. And although he recently has criticized the third-world invasion of America, only a few years ago he supported amnesty. Newt Gingrich is more neocon than conservative." Calhoun said of the retiring Massachusetts governor and the former Speaker of the House.

Calhoun said that the only hope for conservative Republicans is that Tancredo may win the nomination and if that doesn't that perhaps he will run as a third party candidate.

Calhoun also points out that CNN news anchor Lou Dobbs or Minuteman Project Inc. founder Jim Gilchrist may be a third party option for conservatives.

In another article Calhoun said that Congressman Duncan Hunter, Congressman and 1988 Libertarian Presidential Candidate Ron Paul, 2004 Constitution Party Vice Presidential Candidate Pastor Chuck Baldwin and 2004 Constitution Presidential Candidate Michael Peroutka would also be good candidates.
